James Hamilton Beck Collection 1899-1990

The collection is comprised of photocopies pertaining the Dr. James C. Hawthorne, provded by a decesdant, James Hamilton Beck. In addition, a VHS cassette containing an interview with a descendant of Josephi Simeon's, George Durham. Inlcuded are photographs and copies of an obituary. The materials pertain to the Oregon Hospital for the Insance and the Willamette University Medical Department, later the University of Oregon Medical School.

James Hawthorne Beck is the great-grandson of Dr. James Hawthorne who founded the Insane Hospital, the first mental hospital in Oregon, where Dr. Simeon Edward Josephi (1849-1935) worked to put himself through school. James C. Hawthorne (1819-1881) was one of the first neurologists on the Pacific Coast. In 1862, he and his associate, Dr. A. M. Loryea opened the first mental hospital in Oregon.
